Radiation monitoring exercises at Chelyabinsk International Airport

According to the press service of the Ministry of Public Safety of the Chelyabinsk Region, large-scale command and staff exercises were held at the Chelyabinsk International Airport (Balandino) named after I.V. Kurchatov.  The exercises were aimed at practicing in identifying of radiation-hazardous objects and mastering of response procedures in the event of a radiation threat.

During the exercises, one of the Yantar Radiation Monitors detected a watch with a level of radioactive radiation exceeding the established standards. A subsequent inspection, carried out with the MKC-A03 Handheld Radiation Monitor, identified the source of the radiation – a luminous coating on the hands and dial containing radium-226 radionuclides.
