Interdepartmental exercises to prevent the illegal trafficking of nuclear materials and radioactive substances in Zabaikalsk

Annually, Russian customs authorities in different regions of the country conduct exercises to prevent the illegal trafficking of nuclear materials and radioactive substances. On April 26, 2023, such exercises were held at the Zabaikalsk railway crossing, equipped with JSC SPC ASPECT radiation monitoring equipment.
The exercises included mastering of the procedures for detection of an ionizing radiation source in a train moving through the Zabaikalsk railway crossing, and also response procedures following the source detection.
According to the Chita customs, in 2022, they registered 2963 cases of increased levels of ionizing radiation in goods and vehicles. In the 1st quarter of 2023, 583 cases were registered.
Increased levels of radiation were mainly detected in mineral fertilizers, ceramic products, granite, building blocks and bricks, salts, acids, zirconium silicate.
